A day in a life of Zagreb

Meet and greet your guide on the Zagreb main square in front of tourist information centre. You will walk around the city and see the main monuments. The tour starts with a visit to Kaptol, which is medieval part of Zagreb, you will see a Franciscan monastery and church of St. Francis, which according to legend exists there from the 13th century, the time of Francis of Assisi, Cathedral – the story goes all the way from the 11th century. Now, a neo-gothic structure with two twin towers, then city market Dolac, where you will have to buy something traditional from “kumice” (local ladies that sell there), church of St. Mary, built in the 18th century in baroque style.

Ban Jelacic Square is the heart of Zagreb, the central focus point of modern Zagreb. It was originally designed as a place where fairs could be held. It was named in the honour of Ban (Governor) Josip Jelacic. Walking through Strossmayer Promenade you will have the best view of the whole city ending with the Lotrscak tower and the shortest funicular in the world. On the St. Marko Square you will see the Governor’s palace and the Parliament building. We will walk down the Stone Gate, and pass Radiceva street and come back to Ban Jelacic Square.

Here we will make a short break for a coffee or lunch.

We will continue our sightseeing on Zrinjevac, which is a part of the so-called Green horseshoe or Lenuci’s horseshoe. It is spread over an area of 12,540 square meters (135,000 sq ft). The southern part of Zrinjevac sports busts of significant Croatian people: Julije Klovic, Andrija Medulic, Fran Krsto Frankopan, Nikola Jurisic, Ivak Kukuljevic Sakcinski and Ivan Mazuranic. In the middle of the park is a music pavilion built in 1891. Walking through Lenuci’s horseshoe you will see Botanical garden. 
The walk continues to the Museum Mimara, which contains the rich and varied collection with works of the ancient world as well as of the European art from the early Middle Ages to the 20th century.

We will pass the Croatian National Theatre. The neo-baroque building of the theatre is a masterpiece of late historicism Austrian architect Ferdinand Fellner and German architect Hermann Helmer. 

We will come back to the Kaptol, and take local bus to visit one very important landmark in Zagreb – Mirogoj cemetery. The cemetery was created in 1876 on a plot of land owned by the linguist Ljudevit Gaj. Architect Hermann Bollé designed the main building. The cemetery inters members of all religious groups: Catholic, Orthodox, Muslim, Jewish, Protestant,... In the arcades are the last places of many famous Croatians. With a return to Ban Jelacic square, where we will finish our tour.
